ABOUT THEKKADY :
Thekkady, India's largest wild life sanctuary is the country sole tiger reserve The Periyar Tiger reserve it is the only place where tourists can have the facility for elephant Riding Thekkady is one of the best known wild life centers in India. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar remains the large herds of wild elephants that come down to the lake's edge.
Location Idukki District Latitude 9° 15' and 9° 40' North Longitude 76°55' and 77°25' East Boundaries North and East : Madurai, Ramanad and Thirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
Periyar wild Life sanctuary; The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the Periyar adds to the charm of the park. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar, however, are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake.
Kumaly; About 4 Km from Thekkady, this plantation town is closely associated with Thekkady. Situated on the outskirts of the Periyar Sanctuary, Kumily is an important shopping centre and spice trade centre.Kumily is located very close to Periyar in Kerala, South India and serves as the perfect base for going on wildlife safaris to the Periyar wildlife sanctuary in Kerala, India.
Chellarkovil Temple (15 km from Kumily)Chellarkovil is a small village that is famous for its splendid panoramic views like lush landscapes and gurgling waterfalls. It is the place from which we would be able to have a look at the Chellarkovil waterfalls. The specialty of this waterfall is that the place from where the water starts falling belongs to Kerala and the place where the water touches the land belongs to Tamilnadu.The village is also well known for its vast coconut groves of Cumbum in neighbouring Tamil Nadu .
Mangaladevi Temple; The 2000 year old temple is dedicated to the brave Mangaladevi or Kannagi, the protagonist of the Tamil epic Sillapadhikaram. A distraught Kannagi is said to have burnt down Madurai after her husband was wrongly accused of being a thief and killed.
